THE SAMPLE VITAL REGISTRATION WITH VERBAL AUTOPSY

The Sample Vital Registration with Verbal Autopsy (SAVVY) is a system that aims at collecting vital statistics at community level and provides cause of death data. It will not replace the current vital registration system, but aims to support and strengthen the reporting, recording, analysis and dissemination of vital events, especially, births and deaths in order to help inform policy and support routine surveillance and monitoring and evaluation. The SAVVY system will provide a means of assessing the impact of health interventions at the community level. Information on births and deaths will be collected, compiled, processed, analysed and disseminated on a continuous basis and used in monitoring and assessment of health programme impact.

By supporting and strengthening the vital registration system, the SAVVY system will help provide a valuable input into the generation of accurate inter-censual projections of mortality, fertility and population at the lowest administrative units of wards.

OBJECTIVES

Short term objectives • To provide detailed, accurate and timely data on births and deaths at community level

• To provide data for monitoring national health interventions at community level

Long term objectives

• To support and strengthen the reporting, recording, compilation, analyses and dissemination of vital statistics in Zambia

• To strengthen the use of fertility and mortality surveillance data in policy and programme formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation in Zambia

• To contribute towards the development of an effective and efficient national system of vital registration.

• The 2010 Census Cartographic Update

Objectives

To delineate the country into enumeration areas (EAS) to ensure that there is no duplication or omission of persons or households during the 2010 Census.

The delineation of enumeration areas also helps to fulfil the following functions:

- Assess the size of manpower, questionnaires and other equipments required for the census; - Provide comparable workloads to the enumerators; - Ensure that the census is completed in the specified time; - Provide a statistical frame for future socio-economic and demographic surveys.

The 2010 census mapping strategy will involve the use of global positioning system (GPS) and satellite imagery to delineate enumeration areas. The GPS is a modern tool that enables collection of precise geo codes for essential community infrastructure or community statistics
