We provide social statistics

Population and Demography

The main mandate of the Population and Demography branch is to produce Population, Health, Demographic and Social Statistics data for utilization in planning by various end-users. The branch takes technical lead in the coordination and implementation of health related surveys such as the Zambia Demographic and Health Survey (ZDHS), Zambia Population based HIV Impact Assessment Survey (ZAMPHIA).

The branch also produces vital statistics based on data from the Civil Registration System which registers births and deaths occurring in the population during a specified time.

It also produces Migration statistics. The Migration profile of the country provides statistics on international migration, tourism and refugees.

Zambia Demographic and Health Survey (ZDHS)

The ZDHS  is designed to provide up-to-date information on health indicators, including fertility levels, nuptiality, sexual activity, fertility preferences, awareness and use of family planning methods, breastfeeding practices, nutritional status of children, early childhood and maternal mortality, maternal and child health, awareness and behaviours regarding HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections, prevalence of HIV, domestic and gender based violence and birth registration and certification. It is implemented every 4 to 5 years in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, USAID, ICF and other cooperating partners.  The ZDHS was last conducted in 2018, with subsequent surveys conducted in 1992, 1996, 2001-02, 2007 and 2013-14.

Zambia Population-Based Hiv Impact Assessment (ZAMPHIA)

The Zambia Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (ZAMPHIA) is a household-based national survey. It is designed to provide information on HIV related indicators that characterize the HIV epidemic in Zambia and provide greater clarity on the impact of the national HIV program. These include HIV incidence, HIV prevalence, CD4 count distribution, prevalence of detectable ARVs, Viral load suppression and HIV drug resistance. In addition, the survey collects information on selected behaviors typically associated with HIV acquisition and transmission, and on common HIV comorbidities and other health conditions.

Disability Survey

The Zambia National Disability Survey was initiated by the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services (MCDSS), and implemented by the Zambia Statistics Agency and the University of Zambia (UNZA), in collaboration with SINTEF Technology and Society (Norway) and UNICEF Zambia. Its main objective was to estimate the national prevalence of disability among adults and children, disaggregated by sex, severity of disability, province and the rural/urban division. It is based on the understanding of disability set out in the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. This survey is supposed to be held every five years.

Vital Statistics

ZamStats working in collaboration with the Department of National Registration Passport and Citizenship (DNRPC) and other stakeholders have been producing Vital Statistics reports since 2016, following recommendations by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) that all countries should endeavour to produce vital statistics from civil registration regardless of coverage and completeness levels. So far, five reports for the years 2016, 2017 2018, 2019 and 2020 have been produced.

Vital Statistics are a key constituent to good governance, national planning and monitoring of development programmes and health interventions. Annual production and publication of vital statistics reports is expected to respond to a number of vital statistical needs for the country, including monitoring the implementation of National Development Plans, Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Migration Statistics

The branch also compiles migration statistics. One of the reports published on migration statistics is the 2019 national Migration Profile. The 2019 Migration profile was the first comprehensively compiled overview of migration data in Zambia. It provides an overview of trends, patterns, impact and governance of migration in Zambia and utilises data from national censuses and surveys, as well as administrative data and data from other sources. The Migration Profile was developed through a government-led technical working group, co-chaired by ZamStats and the Department of Immigration, in consultation with a broad range of stakeholders and with support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The Migration Profile should be updated every 3 years.
