ZamStats Joins the rest of the World in Commemorating 2026 World Population Day
ZamStats Interpretation of World Population Day 2026
Theme: “Realizing the hopes and aspirations of young people – today and for the future.”
As the world marks World Population Day 2026, with the global population estimated at 8.3 billion people, the focus is on ensuring that young people have the opportunities, resources, and supportive environments they need to achieve their full potential.
For Zambia, this theme highlights the importance of reliable, timely, and disaggregated official statistics in understanding the needs, challenges, and aspirations of the country’s youthful population. Zambia has a predominantly young population, making investment in education, health, employment, skills development, and social protection essential for sustainable national development.
The Zambia Statistics Agency plays a vital role by producing high-quality demographic, social, labour, education, health, and economic statistics through censuses, surveys, and administrative data systems. These statistics provide government, development partners, the private sector, and civil society with the evidence needed to:
- Develop policies and programmes that respond to the needs of young people.
- Monitor progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Zambia’s national development priorities.
- Track youth outcomes in education, employment, health, gender equality, and social inclusion.
- Ensure that no one is left behind through the production of inclusive and disaggregated data.
- Invest in education, health, socioeconomic activities and job creation targeted towards youths keeping in pace with population growth, leading to a youthful population that can become a powerful driver of economic growth through what economics call the demographic dividend.
On this World Population Day, ZamStats reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the National Statistical System and providing credible statistics that support evidence-based decision-making. By investing in quality data today, Zambia is better equipped to create opportunities that allow its young people to realize their hopes and aspirations, both now and in the future.

As Zambia joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Population Day, ZamStats took to the airwaves to discuss the country’s population dynamics, the significance of this year’s theme, and how official statistics guide planning and decision-making for a better future
ZNBC Radio Interview with ZamStats on World Population Day 2026
Today, Zambia joins the rest of the world in commemorating World Population Day under the theme:
“Realizing the hopes and aspirations of young people – today and for the future.”
This year’s theme reminds us that young people are not only the leaders of tomorrow—they are partners in development today. Their aspirations can only be realized when governments and stakeholders make decisions based on reliable and timely statistics.
At ZamStats, our role is to provide the evidence that informs those decisions.
Is Zambia still a youthful population?
Yes. Zambia remains one of the youngest populations in the world.
According to the 2022 Census of Population and Housing, Zambia’s population stood at 19.6 million people, having grown from 13.1 million in 2010, representing an average annual growth rate of 3.5 percent.
The Census further shows that:
- The median age is 18.3 years, meaning half of Zambia’s population is younger than 18 years.
- About 63 percent of the population is below the age of 25.
- Approximately 55 percent of the population is of working age (15–64 years).
These figures clearly indicate that Zambia continues to have a youthful population.
This youthful demographic presents tremendous opportunities, provided we invest adequately in education, healthcare, skills development, innovation, entrepreneurship, and employment creation.
What does this year’s theme mean for Zambia?
The theme is about ensuring that young people have opportunities to achieve their full potential.
For Zambia, this means ensuring that every young person has access to:
- Quality education
- Good healthcare
- Decent employment
- Digital skills
- Entrepreneurship opportunities
- Equal opportunities regardless of gender or location
However, achieving this requires accurate data.
Official statistics tell us:
- Where young people live;
- Whether they are in school;
- Whether they are employed;
- Their health status;
- Their living conditions; and
- Their access to essential services.
Without quality statistics, it becomes difficult to design effective youth policies or measure whether investments are improving young people’s lives.
How does population affect economic growth?
Population growth and economic growth are closely linked.
A growing population increases demand for:
- Schools
- Hospitals
- Housing
- Roads
- Water and sanitation
- Electricity
- Employment opportunities
When investments in education, health and job creation keep pace with population growth, a youthful population can become a powerful driver of economic growth through what economists call the demographic dividend.
The demographic dividend refers to the economic gains that can arise when a country has a relatively large working-age population that is healthy, educated and productively employed.
Conversely, if employment opportunities and essential services do not keep pace, rapid population growth can increase pressure on public services and slow economic progress.
This is why population statistics are essential for national planning.
What did the 2022 Census tell us about the male and female population?
The 2022 Census found that Zambia had:
- 9.66 million males
- 10.04 million females
This translates into a sex ratio of approximately 96 males for every 100 females, indicating that females slightly outnumber males nationally.
This pattern is common in many countries, particularly at older ages where women generally have higher life expectancy.
What other important population patterns emerged?
The Census revealed several important demographic trends:
- Zambia’s population continues to grow rapidly.
- Urbanization is increasing, with more people moving to towns and cities, although 55.3% of the population still lives in rural areas, compared with 44.7% in urban areas.
- The country’s median age increased from 16.9 years in 2010 to 18.3 years in 2022, indicating gradual demographic transition while Zambia remains a youthful nation.
- The dependency ratio has declined compared with 2010, suggesting a growing share of the population is entering working ages—a positive sign if matched by investments in jobs and skills.
Why are these statistics important?
Statistics help answer important questions such as:
- How many classrooms should be built?
- How many health facilities are needed?
- How many teachers and health workers should be trained?
- Where should new roads and water systems be developed?
- How many jobs need to be created each year?
These decisions rely on credible official statistics produced by ZamStats.
As Zambia commemorates World Population Day, we encourage everyone to recognize that statistics are more than numbers, they represent people and their aspirations.
At ZamStats, we remain committed to producing reliable, timely and quality official statistics that support evidence-based planning and help ensure that no one is left behind.
By investing in our young people today and using data to guide our decisions, Zambia can harness its youthful population as a powerful engine for inclusive and sustainable development.
Happy World Population Day 2026.
